Former Australia wicketkeeper suggests CSK to make significant changes before next IPL season
Chennai Super Kings, one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, is facing a challenging 2025 campaign. With only two victories from nine matches, the team’s prospects for a playoff spot appear virtually out of reach. Amid this decline, former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist has commented on MS Dhoni’s future, recommending that the veteran step away from the league after the current season concludes.
CSK's Decline in IPL 2025
Chennai Super Kings are going through one of their poorest seasons in recent times. The team has won only two games after nine matches and is well below the top four in the standings. The team has not been able to provide consistent performances in batting, bowling, and fielding. Adding to the problem, Ruturaj Gaikwad was injured after playing only five games, further diluting the team's strength.
MS Dhoni's Role and Performance
MS Dhoni, who resumed as CSK captain in the middle of the season, has failed to improve the fortunes of the team. The 43-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman has received 98 balls and mustered just 140 runs for the team thus far. Though his leadership is still powerful, his contribution to the team on the field has been humble. This has set tongues wagging about his place in the league.
Gilchrist's Recommendation for Dhoni
Responding to CSK's continued woes, Adam Gilchrist has made some public recommendations urging MS Dhoni to retire after the 2025 season of the IPL. According to Gilchrist, Dhoni has done everything a cricketer wants to achieve within the tournament already and no longer has to assert himself. Expressing understanding of the fact that the choice rests with Dhoni, Gilchrist stressed the urgency of team adaptation and the imperatives of adaptational changes.
Call for Squad Reorganization
Gilchrist did not stop short at criticizing Dhoni. He also suggested that players such as Sheikh Rashid, Devon Conway, and Deepak Hooda should be released before the upcoming season. In his opinion, CSK needs a total revamp if they are to reclaim their previous competitive level. He envisioned that franchises like Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians would hold sway in the top spots towards the end of the 2025 season.
