The movie was conceptualized as a globe-trotting adventure, inspired by Indian culture and traditions, that would evoke adventure movies of the past decades.Early talks about making a movie with Mahesh Babu began in 2010, but the production of the film could only start after RRR (2022). The filming process included several locations including Hyderabad, Odisha, and Kenya. It is also the first Indian film and the fourth film in the world to be shot in Antarctica.Estimated to cost ₹1,400 crore, it will go on to become one of the most expensive films in Indian history. The film has music by M. M. Keeravani, cinematography by P. S. Vinod, and visual effects by V. Srinivas Mohan.
"Varanasi" will get a theatrical release on April 7, 2027, which falls on Ugadi. The movie will become the first Indian movie, as well as the first movie in a language other than English, to use the 1.43:1 IMAX film aspect ratio.
