Ravichandran Ashwin's Future With Chennai Super Kings Uncertain, Says Former Coach

Ashwin and Pathirana Come Under Fire After a Disappointing IPL 2025 Season

Ravichandran Ashwin's comeback to the Chennai Super Kings following more than a decade hasn't been as anticipated. The veteran spinner has failed to deliver in the ongoing IPL season, with many criticizing him for his inability to make an impact.

Following the incident, a statement provided by the ex Team India coach Sanjay Bangar suggested that Ashwin would be likely not in the squad of Chennai. Bangar also pointed to the possibility of the team letting go of fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana.

Sanjay Bangar Comments on Player Retention for IPL 2026

"Will Ashwin remain with CSK for the IPL 2026 season? That is now a big question," opined Bangar. "The franchise has a lot of its budget invested with some players. To bolster their purse value, they might need to release some costliest individuals. According to my understanding, Ashwin and Pathirana are part of the names being looked at for release."

Investment in Ashwin and Pathirana Did Not Yield Results

Prior to this IPL season, Chennai spent ₹9.75 crore in order to retain Ashwin. They also retained Matheesha Pathirana at a price of ₹13 crore. But the investment has not borne fruit as desired.

In the current season, Ashwin has played seven games but has only taken five wickets so far. Because of his poor performance, the team left him on the bench for quite a few games. Pathirana, also, did not give match-winning performances.

Chennai Super Kings Struggle in IPL 2025

The overall performance of the team in the current season has been disappointing. With a solitary two wins in ten games, Chennai has been knocked out of the playoff contention. This has led to rumors that fundamental changes may occur during the team regrouping in the next season.
