Ravi Shastri Backs Sai Sudharsan For India’s England Test Tour

Shastri Lays Stress on Sudharsan's Across-Formats Adaptability

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has suggested Sai Sudharsan as one of the favorites for India's Test team in the upcoming series in England. Reflecting on the young batsman's recent performances in the IPL, Shastri appreciated Sudharsan's consistency of form and adaptability across formats.

Sai Sudharsan is a good player with the correct temperament and technique to do well in red-ball cricket," said Shastri. "Being a left-hander with good basics, he should be given serious thought for the England tour. He is one of the few young batsmen who can switch so easily between formats."

Competition for Batting Positions Increases

Shastri also made it clear that the path of Sudharsan to the team will not be smooth, with big-hitting seniors such as Shreyas Iyer having their fingers crossed for a comeback. "There will be competition in the air, and it's good news for Indian cricket. If Iyer comes back in form, it will make it even more difficult for selection."

Left-Arm Pacer Key to English Conditions

Referring to India's bowling lineup, Shastri underlined the importance of a left-arm paceman in English conditions irrespective of the presence of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. He wanted the team to include the bowlers Arshdeep Singh or Khaleel Ahmed and believed that they can at least provide a crucial supporting role.

"Even though Arshdeep has played only in the limited-overs cricket, there is no need to keep him in wraps," Shastri said further. "If he can bowl 15–20 overs well, he is a member of the red-ball team. Khaleel is another suitable candidate with the same skill set."

Tech and Media's Role in Modern Cricket

Similarly, in the context of safety gear, Shastri likened media and technology to helmets that are part of a cricket kit. "The contemporary players have to use technology wisely. It's an excellent tool for growth. Compared to our era with radio and television, today's media offer much more access and information, and the game can grow accordingly," he added further.
