Jasprit Bumrah Not In Contention For Test Captaincy Of Team India

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have bidden farewell officially from Test cricket. Their leaving has raised one major question: who will become the next Team India captain in the next cycle? India are scheduled to travel to England in June for a five-match series, generating keen speculation over who will be the new skipper.

Bumrah's Name Was Considered

Jasprit Bumrah was also previously considered as a front-runner for the role. He has led India in the longest format of the game before, but only one time in a game against England and two times in the Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. As an interesting side note, he led India to a historic Perth Test victory while Rohit Sharma was out.

Bumrah Withdraws Due to Workload

But Bumrah is now out of the race for captaincy. The reason is his workload. He has just come back from a spinal injury and might not be available for all five games in England. His earlier injury during the previous Border Gavaskar Trophy also excluded him from the Champions Trophy and early games of the IPL. With these physical issues, Bumrah cannot assume full-time leadership responsibilities.

Shubman Gill Set to Be Appointed Captain

Reports indicate Shubman Gill will be appointed the new Test captain. He is already vice-captain in the ODI format. Rishabh Pant is set to become vice-captain in Tests. An official announcement is pending. With this change, Indian Test cricket is ushering in a new leadership era under Gill and Pant.
