Team India to Decide on Captaincy Before England Tour
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket recently. Their retirements were in quick succession. India is now set to play a five-match Test series in England next June. The selection panel now has to choose the team as well as a new captain.
Ex-Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin expressed his opinion regarding this matter. According to him, Jasprit Bumrah possesses the right attributes to captain the team. But another name coming up is that of Shubman Gill.
Ashwin Applauds Bumrah as Captain's Material
Ashwin commented on his YouTube channel about the team's future. "I'm not sure why Rohit and Virat retired at the same time, this is a tough time for Indian cricket." he said. He further said that new coach Gautam Gambhir will be very significant now.
He pointed out that the squad going to England is filled with a lot of young players. Bumrah is one of the oldest in the bunch. Bumrah, according to Ashwin, is the owner of all the qualities of a good leader. Nevertheless, he stated the ultimate decision rests with the selectors.
Leadership Gap After Ro-Ko Era
Ashwin also spoke about the impact of losing Rohit and Virat. He stated that the team is now without a leader and added, "Experience has become very important, especially for a tour like this. This is something that we can't get just by pushing a button."
He further added, "We will definitely miss Virat's energy and Rohit's match sense in England."
