Chopra Says He Was Never Close to Nadeem

Neeraj Chopra (an Indian javelin thrower) has expressed that he was never actually good friends with Arshad Nadeem who is a Pakistani athlete. He clarified that their interaction was professional, not personal.

Chopra's Statement on NC Classic Tournament and Invitation

The clarification comes from a press conference that Chopra held before the Doha Diamond League on May 16. The thrower elaborated on the recent problems that occurred in the Neeraj Chopra Classic javelin tournament. The situation worsened because of the standoff between India and Pakistan as a result, the tournament was indefinitely postponed.

A controversy brewed when it was announced that Arshad Nadeem had been invited to the tournament. Chopra clarified that he had issued this invite, among others to javelin world stars, two days prior to the Pahalgam terror attack.

Chopra Speaks on His Relation with Nadeem

In response to how they became friends, Neeraj replied:

"I want to explain that I do not have an intimate relationship with Nadeem. We never stood close as friends. But that does not imply that we do not communicate. We communicate as sportspersons."

He further explained that his interaction with others in the sport is always respectful and professional. According to him, cordial conduct is beneficial for the small javelin fraternity.

Acknowledging Mutual Respect in Athletics

Neeraj mentioned that javelin competitors from all sides want to perform to the best of their abilities for their nations. They might compete fiercely with one another, yet they should have respect. He also mentioned that he enjoys courteous behavior and also behaves in the same manner.

Background: Olympic Accomplishments of Both Competitors

Arshad Nadeem took home the gold medal during the previous Paris Olympics, whereas Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal. Though they are great competitors, their personal relationship is restricted to the sporting environment.
