Shastri Had Anticipated Kohli to Play for Longer Period
Ravi Shastri, the erstwhile head coach of Team India, expressed his views on the retirement of Virat Kohli from Test cricket. He indicated that the announcement left him stunned. Shastri felt Kohli could have played the game for another couple of years, at least for two or three years.
Private Conversation Prior to Retirement
Shastri has confirmed that one week before the official statement, he discussed the retirement issue with Kohli. Shastri reported that Kohli had already made up his mind and believed he had done everything he could for the game. Shastri clarified that Kohli doesn't regret leaving Test cricket.
Mental Fatigue Led to the Decision
As per Shastri, even if Kohli is physically fit, mental fatigue was a significant contributor to his decision. He stated that the extremely high involvement of Kohli during matches might have led to this fatigue.
Intensity on the Field Took a Toll
Shastri added that Kohli does not switch off mentally often. He explained that Kohli tends to feel responsible for all parts of the game, including taking wickets and making decisions. Shastri noted that always being under pressure is the greatest destroyer of mental energy.
No Goals Left for Kohli
Shastri was of the view that Kohli has already achieved everything in the game, and also stated that Kohli has nothing left to prove in Test cricket.
