Ravichandran Ashwin Backs Ravindra Jadeja As India’s Next Test Captain

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Retire Before England Tour

It has been said that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stepped away from an upcoming fixture for India against England. Their retirement has begun the debate regarding the future Test captain. Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah are the top contenders for the job. But Ravichandran Ashwin had some other idea on his YouTube channel—he selected Ravindra Jadeja.

Team Selection Due by Late May

The BCCI selectors will declare the England tour squad in the last week of May. A source confirmed that Shubman Gill was likely to take over the command from Rohit Sharma. Some ex-cricketers think Jasprit Bumrah should lead the team. Ashwin also feels Bumrah is a fine option but has Jadeja as a strong 'wild card' candidate.

Ashwin's Comments on Shubman Gill and Captaincy

Ashwin applauded Shubman Gill for his batting skills. He spoke about Gill's impressive performances recently in Ranchi and Dharamsala against England earlier this year. However, Ashwin said that Gill's current IPL performance is not sufficient reason to appoint him as captain. He recommended that Gill work harder in domestic cricket.

Why Ashwin Supports Jadeja for Captaincy

As per Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja is among the most experienced players in the team. He is in favor of Jadeja being the captain of the team for a period of not less than two years. Throughout this period, a would-be captain should learn from him. That player may begin as vice-captain and gain experience before being given charge.

IPL Performance and Future Leadership

Ashwin also spoke about the Gujarat Titans' ongoing IPL campaign. They could make the playoffs, he said. If they do, it will strengthen Shubman Gill's captaincy claims. Nevertheless, Ashwin cautioned that Test captaincy could not be decided based on a single IPL season. In addition, the captain should keep on participating in first-class cricket matches as well.
