Delhi Falls Short in Playoff Race After Loss to Mumbai
On Wednesday, Delhi Capitals went down to Mumbai Indians in an IPL 2025 match by 59 runs. With this loss, Delhi was eliminated from the playoff race.
Coach Badani Points to Inconsistent Openers
The reason why Delhi failed to progress was shared by head coach Hemang Badani. He said the team failed to find a reliable opening pair.
"We gave several players like Jake Fraser McGurk, Abhishek Porel, Faf du Plessis, and Karun Nair an opportunity. But none of them delivered consistently,” Badani said.
He added that Delhi lacked strong starts and did not perform well in powerplays, which other teams used better.
“Only KL Rahul stood out. He scored 504 runs in 13 matches,” Badani noted.
Strong Start, Then Drop in Form
Delhi won five of its first six games (in the season) to start the season. After that, their form declined.
Badani pointed out one match where Delhi was close to winning but fell short.
"In the match against Kolkata Knight Riders, we required 60 runs from the last six overs with 7 wickets in hand. Still, we couldn’t finish the game,” he said.
Losing Momentum Hurt Playoff Chances
Badani concluded that the team’s losing streak made it harder to qualify.
“When a team keeps losing, it’s tough to stay in the playoff race,” he stated.
