Shreyas Iyer Achieves Lopsided IPL Milestone
Shreyas Iyer has achieved the rare IPL feat of being the first IPL captain to take three different teams to the final. During the 2025 season, he took Punjab Kings to the final after they beat Mumbai Indians in the second qualifier. He was unbeaten and was instrumental in the victory.
Previously, he led Delhi Capitals to the finals in 2020 and Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024. Now, he has done it again with Punjab. The team acquired him for ₹26.75 crores.
Iyer Remains Composed Under Pressure
Shreyas indicated he likes playing in big-pressure games. He revealed that remaining calm enables the team to perform well. "There is no special reason behind being calm. I just enjoy big matches," he said.
He added that working quietly helps in chasing big targets. “Everyone must stay alert from the first ball. I took time to settle, and others scored freely early on,” he explained. Despite losing the first qualifier, the team quickly moved on. “One match doesn’t define us,” Iyer said.
Mumbai Indians Suffer Rare Defeat
Mumbai Indians were dealt a severe blow. For the first time in IPL, they could not defend a 200+ total. They had put up a target of 204, but Punjab chased it successfully.
Shreyas Iyer and Nehal Wadhawa were the key players in the chase. Mumbai had won 18 out of 19 matches earlier when scoring 200+ targets. The loss broke that strong record.
They also had a tough time at the Ahmedabad stadium. This was their sixth consecutive defeat at the stadium. They last won here against Rajasthan in 2014.
