Ganguly Rules Out Political Aspirations
Former Indian cricket skipper Sourav Ganguly reaffirmed once again that he has no intention of going into politics. He was asked whether he would take up a political career, particularly the role of Chief Minister of West Bengal next year, to which he categorically denied any such thoughts. Ganguly reiterated that his interest is cricket and coaching.
Ready to Grab Coaching Position
Ganguly replied that he is willing to be the head coach of the Indian cricket team. He said that he was BCCI president after retiring from cricket in 2013. Now that he is 52 years old, he believes he is set for the role of coach. He further noted that the future remains uncertain but is ready to seize the chance if presented with it.
Challenges Ahead for Kohli and Rohit
Ganguly talked about the struggles the old players such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will have to remain fit for the 2027 ODI World Cup. India have 27 matches spread over 9 bilateral series ahead of them before the tournament. He gauged both players could play approximately 15 games a year.
He clarified that it will be difficult to keep fit and in touch for selection. "All players do move away from the game eventually. It won't be easy to play 15 games a year and remain fit. I have no advice to give to them. They know the game inside out. Kohli is an excellent player. Replacing him will take time. That's not a cause of concern presently," Ganguly further stated.
Laxman's Disappointment in 2003
Ganguly also remembered a self-experience in the 2003 ODI World Cup selection. VVS Laxman neither spoke with him for three months after being left out of the team. Ganguly was the captain at that time. The selectors had drafted Dinesh Mongia instead of the form batsman Laxman.
Ganguly added Laxman was naturally disappointed. He added it is understandable that players get disappointed when they are missing such a big tournament like the World Cup. Later, Laxman, however, accepted the decision and appreciated the team's performance. Team India became the runner-up in that competition. Mongia, though, did not play up to the mark during the World Cup.
