MI New York Secure Title with Narrow Win
MI New York claimed the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 crown by overpowering Washington Freedom by five runs in the last game. After deciding to bat first, New York posted 180/7 in 20 overs. Quinton de Kock headed the innings with an 77-run score. In reply, Washington Freedom achieved 175/5 in their pursuit.
Early Setbacks Hurt Washington Freedom
Washington lost their opener Mitchell Owen on the first ball. Trent Boult bowled, and Monank Patel caught him. Boult got rid of Andres Gauss too, who also got zero. This time, Kieron Pollard finished the catch.
Notwithstanding the bad start, Rachin Ravindra (70) and Jack Edwards (33) contributed 84 runs for the third wicket in 45 balls. Once Edwards was out, Ravindra shared another 46-run partnership with Glenn Phillips, who scored 48* runs. Glenn Maxwell made 15 but was unable to push the tempo when required. He was out at a critical juncture. Towards the last over, when there were 12 runs required, Phillips was given a solitary delivery and it resulted in a single. Washington's middle order was unable to seal the game and Maxwell's poor tempo was a major disappointment.
New York Bowlers Deliver Under Pressure
Two of the New York bowlers, Boult and Rushi Ugarkar, each claimed two wickets. Kenjige picked up one wicket. Their strict bowling ensured that the team won.
De Kock Anchors New York's Innings
MI New York decided to bat after winning the toss. De Kock and Monank Patel provided them with a good start with a 72-run stand. Patel made 28 runs. Tejinder contributed 14 runs before losing his wicket. De Kock then further developed the innings with Nicholas Pooran, who made 21 runs. De Kock got to his half-century but was later sent back after scoring 77.
Washington bowlers then responded in the latter part. They knocked out Pollard (0), Bracewell (4), and Tristan Luce (2) in no time. Kunwarjeet Singh contributed a valuable cameo of 22 not out in the last overs, taking the team to 180.
