Brian Lara Expresses Discontent Over Cricket Board's Decisions
Former West Indies cricketer Brian Lara criticized the West Indies Cricket Board for its handling of national players. He said that talented cricketers, like Nicholas Pooran, are choosing to retire early from international matches. According to Lara, the main reason is the opportunity to earn more in league cricket. He placed the full responsibility for this trend on the cricket board.
Lara Refers to Pooran as a Prime Example
Lara stated that players are taking career choices on their terms. He referred to Nicholas Pooran, who retired from international cricket at the age of 29, as a prime example. Lara stated it is commonly known that international leagues have high salaries, which draw players. He further stated that five or six top leagues currently pay well enough to dictate such a decision.
Role of Cricket Board and International Comparison
Lara also claimed that the West Indies Cricket Board has failed to retain talent. He underlined the fact that the board needs to examine the policies implemented by England, Australia, and India. These nations are better at retaining players in the national framework, claimed Lara. He asserted that due to poor policies, West Indies players opt for league options.
Global Impact of Franchise Leagues
Lara further stated that other nations' players, such as New Zealand and South Africa, are also doing the same. He clarified that they are doing it for their families and financial security. He feels that boards should react to these issues more appropriately.
Nicholas Pooran's Career and Recent Performance
Nicholas Pooran recently retired from international cricket last month. He is 29. The move came as a shock to many cricket enthusiasts. Recently, he played well for Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL. With the next T20 World Cup already planned for 2026, his departure is a big blow for West Indies cricket.
Pooran represented his country in 106 T20 Internationals and 61 One Day Internationals. In T20Is, he contributed 2,275 runs. In ODIs, he contributed 1,983 runs. His run record includes 3 centuries and 11 half-centuries.
