India Draws 2-2 in the Five-Test Series Against England
India and England recently contested five Test matches for the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy. The series was a 2-2 draw. In the fourth Test in Manchester, Rishabh Pant injured himself playing a reverse sweep shot against Chris Woakes. The ball struck his foot, and he collapsed in agony. Pant had to be taken off on a golf cart. He was back the next day to bat and scored 54 runs. But he did not bat once in the second innings.
Coach Gautam Gambhir Suggests Injury Substitution Law
India head coach Gautam Gambhir spoke about the incident. According to him, Test cricket must permit injured players to be substituted. England captain Ben Stokes did not agree. He said the suggestion was absurd. But England itself encountered a similar problem later on. In the fifth Test at the Oval, England's Chris Woakes was injured in the shoulder. He missed the first innings but was required to bat in the second. Woakes emerged with one hand on the bat when England required 20 runs to win.
Ashwin Reacts to Stokes' Comments on His YouTube Channel
Ravichandran Ashwin expressed his view in a video. According to him, one should think before speaking. He quoted a Tamil proverb, which stands for "Karma never leaves anyone." Ashwin added that Gambhir had been questioned by reporters regarding Pant's injury. Gambhir had said that Stokes' injury substitution rule would be useful. Upon reporters' telling this to Stokes, he rejected it. Ashwin mentioned that he is respectful of Stokes as a cricketer. Nevertheless, he believed Stokes must have thought more deeply.
Ashwin Refers to Michael Vaughan's Endorsement of Substitutes
Ashwin also talked about Michael Vaughan. The ex-England cricketer endorsed the concept of injury substitutions. Ashwin stated that the players must be understanding towards their competitors. Ashwin opined that Stokes should put himself in the shoes of a person like Pant getting hurt while playing for England.
