Rahane Calls for New Selection Framework
Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has stated that the selection process in domestic cricket needs a radical change. In his opinion, selectors should be recently retired first-class players who understand the new pattern of cricket.
Now, the rule allows any player with a minimum of 10 first-class games and over five years of retirement to come forward as a state selector. Rahane finds this rule old-fashioned and not indicative of the pace and the format of the game today.
Selectors Need to Get Acquainted with Today's Cricket
Rahane said that the players should not fear selectors and the selectors should think in terms of what is happening now in cricket, not as it happened years back.
He also added that the mindset of selectors has to adapt with evolving formats such as T20 and the IPL.
As per him:
"Recent leading cricketers and retired cricketers should be made selectors. The game has changed a lot, and the selectors should realize this change. We do not want people making decisions on how cricket was played 20-30 years ago."
Rahane also emphasized that the selection committees should have representatives from all the states. This, he said, would allow the players to play freely and confidently.
Rahane's Present Career Status
Ajinkya Rahane has been out of the Indian team for quite some time. His recent outing was in a Test match against the West Indies in July 2023.
Being 37, Rahane has fierce competition from young players, so it is unlikely that he will make a comeback.
Cricket experts are of the opinion that Rahane's career in international cricket is just around the corner. His long-time batting partner Cheteshwar Pujara, who had played 103 Tests for India, retired in all three formats earlier this year, in August 2025.
