Ongoing Debate Over Harshit Rana's Selection
There remains an ongoing debate over the selection of Harshit Rana for the upcoming Australian tour. Ravichandran Ashwin, a retired Indian cricketer, reacted strongly against personal insult directed towards individuals included in the selection. He had asserted that personal invective cannot have space in sports discussion.
The row began when former selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth expressed that Gautam Gambhir had a role to play in Harshit's selection, suggesting partiality. Gambhir responded during a press conference following the second Test against the West Indies, labeling such remarks as irresponsible and stating people shouldn't speak irresponsibly for notoriety on social media. Ashwin retorted the problem by calling for maturity and respect in public statements.
Ashwin's View on Constructive Criticism
Ashwin stated that players should never be subjected to personal insults. He explained how insulting a player's personal life or character has long-term consequences. Referring to his own experience, he explained how previous cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar regularly belittled him during his entire career. Ashwin claimed that he never allowed those words to become personal to him, and that protected him.
He cautioned that criticism should be directed towards the playing of a player and not his personal life. Ashwin was alarmed at the rising trend of negative comment and urged fans and the media to value the emotional cost that such remarks impose on players and their families.
Appeal to Fans and Media
Ashwin appealed to one and all to show restraint and kindness while commenting on cricketers. He singled out that today's comments on the subject of Harshit Rana have become unnecessarily combative. He wanted to know if the same critics will be able to celebrate Harshit if he performs well in the future.
Ashwin requested his fans and the cricket community to give respect to the game and not make negative remarks. He highlighted the fact that the individual who is being criticized could be a brother, relative, or friend of somebody. Discussion about the game should not be a personal attack, according to him.
