Suryakumar Yadav On Shubman Gill's Captaincy: Pressure Is Real, But It Drives Me To Improve

Leadership Positions in Indian Cricket

The Indian cricket team has two captains now. Shubman Gill is the captain of the team in Tests and One-Day Internationals, while Suryakumar Yadav is the captain of the T20 format. Gill is Yadav's deputy in T20s. Suryakumar is leading the team currently for the Australia T20 series.

Cricket analysts are of the view that Gill could soon be the all-format captain. Suryakumar has acknowledged that Gill's emergence has brought additional pressure upon him. Nonetheless, he views it as an incentive to do better.

Suryakumar's Reaction to Gill's Appointment

I am glad that Gill is the captain for both the formats," said Suryakumar Yadav. "He is performing very well as the captain of the team. Most people believe that his return has put pressure on me, and that is true to a certain extent. It is natural to feel so. But I don't want to think too much about it. I just look at my own game and try to perform my best.

Suryakumar also mentioned that he would not be disillusioned if Gill is made T20 captain in the future. "There is mutual respect and understanding between us, on and off the field. I know what kind of player and person he is. That inspires me to play better cricket. I am genuinely happy for him," he explained.

Performance and Expectations

Earlier, Suryakumar's batting used to trouble bowlers. Of late, however, his form has gone down and good performances have not been forthcoming.

At the same time, Shubman Gill has been going steady as Test captain. As the Potti Cup is to take place next year, experts feel that Suryakumar needs to deliver well in the forthcoming five-match T20 series against Australia to consolidate his captaincy position.
