South Africa Maintains Winning Streak
Defeated in their first match against England, the women's cricket team of South Africa has made a good comeback in the ODI World Cup. The team won its fourth successive match with a 10-wicket victory against Sri Lankan hosts in a rain-affected match played on Friday.
Match Under Weather Conditions
The game in Colombo was postponed because of rain, as happened with the previous three games suspended. Then the rain eased, and a 20-over game proceeded. Sri Lanka's first innings yielded 105 runs for 7 wickets in 20 overs. Vishmi Gunaratne scored 34 runs and was the hosts' best player. Nonkululeko Mlaba took 3 wickets for 30 runs, and Masabata Klaas took 2 wickets for 18 runs for South Africa.
South Africa's Gruelling Chase
The target was then reduced to 121 runs due to the rain disruption. South Africa made the run chase an easy walk in the park as they reached the target within 14.5 overs without losing a single wicket. Captain Laura Wolvaardt topped the show with 60 not out from 47 balls, 8 fours. Tazmin Brits supported her with 55 not out from 42 balls, 4 fours and 2 sixes. Wolvaardt was given Player of the Match for her performance.
Tournament Standings and Implications
This was Sri Lanka's third loss in five matches, though two of their matches were rain-abandoned. Their dream of reaching the semi-finals is now thin. The opposite is the case for South Africa, with four wins in five matches, on the cusp of qualifying for the semi-finals.
