Sunil Gavaskar Dismisses Claims About Senior Players Underperforming Under New Captain

Social Media Gossip

Rumors on current social media suggest that experienced Indian cricket players are performing badly under new management. Fans are debating the performance of former captains and current captains, reviving old fan rivalries such as Sachin Tendulkar vs MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli vs Sachin Tendulkar, and Shubman Gill vs Yashasvi Jaiswal.

The current controversy began following Rohit Sharma's poor performance in his first ODI game under Shubman Gill's captaincy. Some users stated Rohit was struggling because he was replaced by Gill as captain.

Gavaskar Refutes the Speculations

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was tired of such assumptions. He said such claims are false and demeaning to players.

Gavaskar explained that Indian fans have constructed a myth that senior players intentionally play subpar whenever there is a captaincy change. He explained that this is not true. Every player knows that below-par performance can result in being dropped from the team. Therefore, no professional cricketer would intentionally play badly, even under personal anguish over the change of captaincy.

Endorsement for Shubman Gill's Leadership

Reacting to queries about management of experienced players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli by Shubman Gill, Gavaskar said that Gill had already replied.

Gill said before the ODI series that his relationship with senior teammates would not be impacted after becoming the captain. He added that he values their experience and would seek their advice whenever necessary. Gavaskar added that having the top ODI players in the team is a good influence on the team as well as the captain.
