Unpredicted Bowling Change Turned the Match
- A target of 300 runs is no longer considered a difficult task in women's ODI cricket. India had already proved it, chasing a huge total against Australia in the World Cup semi-final. Because of that performance many expected a similar result in the final from South Africa.
- However, South Africa captain Lara Wolvaardt mentioned that a crucial call by India's skipper Harmanpreet Kaur turned the game around. The call to bring in Shafali Verma into the attack was something that completely caught them off guard, Wolvaardt said.
Wolvaardt Admits Surprise and Missed Opportunity
"We did not expect Shafali to bowl like that. It was a complete surprise," said Wolvaardt. "She bowled at a slower pace and took two crucial wickets. It is never ideal to lose wickets to a part-time bowler in a World Cup final. We were disappointed because we failed to handle her properly. She bowled very effectively, and we were not prepared for it at all. That move from the Indian side really shocked us."
Harmanpreet Kaur Explains Her Decision
Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur reflected on the game afterwards. "When Soone was still batting, South Africa looked in control," she said. "Then I noticed Shafali. I have seen her bat, and I knew her mindset. Something told me to give her one over. That decision became the turning point for us. I had already planned to let her bowl two or three overs. Shafali even said she could bowl ten if needed. I agreed and gave her the chance. She deserves full credit for taking responsibility and performing so well. It was a proud moment for the team."
