Sunil Gavaskar Says Women's World Cup Win Should Not Be Compared To 1983 Victory

Indian Women’s Team Creates History

The Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian women's cricket team won the ODI World Cup for the first time in 47 years. It is also India's first-ever World Cup title in women's cricket. Soon after the triumph, many started drawing a comparison between it and the historic 1983 World Cup win of the Indian men's team.

Gavaskar’s View on the Comparison

  • Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar said there is no need to compare the two achievements. He explained that both teams played in completely different conditions and situations.
  • As Gavaskar records, the men's team had not reached the knockouts prior to 1983; it always bowed out during the group stage. On the other hand, the women had already reached finals twice before they won this time, thus showing better consistency.

Impact of 1983 Victory on Indian Cricket

Gavaskar says the 1983 win changed Indian cricket forever. Parents allowed their children to take up cricket as a profession. The sport began to grow very fast and, with the arrival of the IPL, much stronger financially too. Players started coming into the national setup from smaller towns of India. The game became representative in its truest sense.

Significance of the 2025 Women's Victory

Gavaskar added that the women's team's win would similarly affect world women's cricket. India's victory is likely to break the monopoly of those countries which used to dominate women's cricket.

India's Journey in World Cups

  • The Indian women's team had reached the ODI World Cup finals in 2005 and 2017, too, but lost both times. But this latest victory speaks volumes of resolute will and teamwork.
  • The men's team, which won in 1983, reached the final again in 2003 and lost to Australia. They regained the title in 2011 under Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Later, under Rohit Sharma's leadership in 2023, they reached the final but could not win.
