Shami's Test Future: Pujara Demands Transparency From Team Management

Current Status of Mohammed Shami

Mohammed Shami has been out of India’s Test team since the 2023 World Test Championship final at the Oval. He also missed the series against England. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar says there is no clear update on Shami’s fitness.

In domestic cricket, however, Shami is doing well. He has picked 15 wickets in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season.

Selection Clarity in Pujara's View

Cheteshwar Pujara said Shami deserves clarity from the selectors and team management.

Key points of Pujara's remarks include:

  • Selectors need to convey their plans on Shami clearly.
  • Shami must know whether he remains in consideration for national selection.
  • If the preference is for younger bowlers then that too should be mentioned.
  • This should enable Shami to make a clear call on either focusing on his domestic cricket or shifting attention towards the IPL.

Team Perspective on Shami's Position

Ahead of the Kolkata Test, captain Shubman Gill admitted that bowlers like Shami are few and far between.

Simultaneously:

Gill said present performing bowlers cannot be overlooked He said selection of Shami is completely up to the selectors.

Shami’s Career Record and India’s Upcoming Schedule

So far, Shami has taken 229 wickets in 64 Test matches.

India is currently playing a two-Test series against South Africa. The next period of Test cricket for India is uncertain. Future tours include:

  • New Zealand’s tour of India in January 2026 (three ODIs, five T20Is).
  • India’s tour of England in July (five T20Is, three ODIs).

With limited Test fixtures ahead, many analysts believe Shami’s immediate return to the Test side appears unlikely.
