Ganguly on Sundar's Batting Position
Sourav Ganguly believes that Washington Sundar should not bat at number three in Test cricket. Sundar batted at this position in the Kolkata Test where he scored 29 runs in the first innings and 31 in the second. India lost the match by 30 runs and fell behind 0-1 in the series.
Ganguly said that Sundar is in strong form and does a good job with both bat and ball, but the number three spot requires a specialist batter. He has said that solid and experienced batsmen are needed in the first five batting slots of any team. According to him, Sundar might not be suited for number three on different soils, particularly England, Australia, South Africa, or New Zealand. He said India's head coach Gautam Gambhir must look into this area.
Comments on Team Composition
Ganguly also shared his opinion on the team's combination of spinners at home games. He mentioned how Sundar bowled only one over in the entire Test match at Kolkata. Using this as a reference, Ganguly believes it is not necessary to select four spinners. When there is turn on the pitch, the main spinners bowl 20-30 overs, he elaborates. Due to this, he suggested that including a fourth spinner doesn’t add value. Again, he wanted Gambhir to take a look into this selection strategy.
