Team India could manage just 93 runs in the Kolkata Test against a target of 124 runs. After this embarrassing defeat, several social media users started blaming head coach Gautam Gambhir for this. Many demanded his sacking from the position. In this context, the former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa backed Gautam Gambhir. He questioned the logic of sacking a coach as the players failed to deliver.
Uthappa says on his YouTube channel that people are blaming Gambhir only because of the Kolkata Test result. He further states that Gambhir cannot score runs for the team; this has to be done by the players. Even somebody like Rahul Dravid, who scored over 20,000 runs in international cricket, faced criticism when he was coaching. Then Uthappa went ahead and said that criticism can happen with any person who is in that position.
Under Gambhir's coaching, India have played 18 Tests and won nine. The results put pressure on him. However, in ODIs and T20Is, the performance of the team has been better.
Indian batters toiled quite a bit during the Kolkata Test. The nature of the pitch was also a talking point among the fans and analysts. Gambhir received more criticism for saying that he had asked for such a pitch. The second Test between India and South Africa starts on Saturday, November 22, in Guwahati. The two-match series stands 0-1 against India. To avoid losing the series, the team has to win the second Test.
