Shubman Gill injured himself while batting during the Kolkata Test. He had retired during the first match and did not bat in the second innings. He is currently missing out on the second Test going on at Guwahati.
The absence of Gill made Rishabh Pant the captain. This is the first time Pant has been leading India in Test cricket. Former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting showed support for Pant. According to him, taking over captaincy mid-series is not easy.
"It is not easy to captain the team in an important match, especially when you come back after losing a first Test. Still, Pant has the experience to do the job." He also felt that a wicketkeeper often knows what is happening on the ground. Pant has acquired experience in leading Delhi Capitals in the IPL too, and Ponting feels that would help him handle this situation.
Previously, Ponting was the coach of Delhi Capitals and had a close look at Pant’s captaincy. In that way, he gained confidence about Pant’s leadership.
India got 124 runs and lost the Kolkata Test by 30 runs. Currently, India is lagging behind 0-1 in the series. India needs to win the second Test in Guwahati to remain in the series and try for a series draw.
