The pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who played in the two-Test series against South Africa, has been rested for the ODI series starting tomorrow as a result of selector concerns over his workload. He is expected to return in the five-match T20 series that follows.
In the light of this, former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin shared his thoughts regarding Bumrah’s future. Ashwin felt that Bumrah must focus on white-ball cricket and stick to Test matches only when needed.
"I am on good terms with Bumrah. Had I been close to him now, I would have told him to give priority to white-ball cricket. I would have told him to avoid playing Test cricket unless absolutely necessary. I know he loves the longer format and enjoys playing Tests, but it is a very tough format, " Ashwin said during a conversation with AB de Villiers on his YouTube channel.
Ashwin added, “I want Bumrah to play T20 cricket. I do not want him to play ODIs that are not crucial. Tests are important, especially overseas. India can use other fast bowlers for home matches.”
AB de Villiers supported Ashwin's opinion. He said Bumrah should feature in Test matches only in Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and England. De Villiers also suggested that Bumrah should stick to white-ball cricket with the upcoming World Cups in mind.
