If I Were Coach, I Would Take Responsibility For Defeat: Ravi Shastri

Under head coach Gautam Gambhir, India lost two Test series at home. Those defeats earned Gambhir scathing criticism. Recently, Team India fared badly in a Test match against South Africa. Indian batsmen could not cope with the spinners and got out rapidly. The bowlers also failed to make their impact.

Former coach Ravi Shastri, in this context, commented on the performance of India against South Africa. He said that he was not defending Gambhir, while elaborating that players must take responsibility for their performance.

Shastri said that the top order of India misfired in the Guwahati Test. From 95/1, the team collapsed to 130/7 in no time. "That does not mean that Team India is weak. Our players are talented. They are used to playing spin. They have faced spin since childhood. They need to take more responsibility and perform," he said.

Asked whether he was defending Gambhir, Shastri said, "I am not defending him. He should take full responsibility. If this had happened when I was coaching, I would have been the first to take responsibility. I would also have questioned the players in the team meeting."
