Yashasvi Jaiswal's Struggles In The Ongoing ODI Series

Overview of Jaiswal's recent ODI Form

Yashasvi Jaiswal is faring badly in the ODI series against South Africa. India are without captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer as both got injured. Because of that, Jaiswal received more opportunities. He failed to capitalize on them. While he turned into an important Test player, in his ODI career, he has played only three matches so far. Ahead of the South Africa series, he played one ODI against England in Nagpur in February this year. In the said match, he scored 15 runs from 22 balls.

High Competition in the Indian White-Ball Setup

Competition in the Indian white-ball team is intense. Every game is an opportunity. Jaiswal came into the ODI team since two seniors were not available. He had to do well to retain his place. The young left-hander has not played a memorable innings in this series so far.

Performance in the first two ODIs

  • In the current three-match ODI series, India and South Africa have played two games so far. The third game will be staged in Visakhapatnam on December 6.
  • Jaiswal scored 18 runs from 16 balls in the first ODI.
  • In the second ODI, he scored 22 runs from 38 balls.
  • He also failed to convert his start into a big score. In three ODIs, he has gathered 55 runs with an average of 18.3. The 22 runs in Raipur remain his highest ODI score for now. Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad utilized his opportunity and scored a century. Jaiswal has not been able to create that kind of impact.

Concerns About Fielding

He also needs to work on his fielding. During the tour against England, he dropped catches. In Raipur ODI, he dropped one at the boundary when Aiden Markram was on 53. Markram went ahead and made 110. That also hampered India’s cause in the match, too. Meanwhile, Tilak Verma was brilliant in fielding at the boundary, saving important runs. Even the commentators stated the difference and said that Jaiswal has to work upon it. Limited Opportunities Ahead Team India might make some changes after the Raipur defeat, which will further diminish Jaiswal's chances in the upcoming match. If he gets another chance at Visakhapatnam, then he must come up with a strong performance. His ODI place is not secure at this moment, according to many cricket experts.
