Gautam Gambhir Highlights Value of Senior Players
- Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir said that the team requires the experience of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the ODI format. He said that both players need to keep performing consistently. He made these comments after Rohit and Kohli headlined India's ODI series win against South Africa.
- Gambhir said both of them have shown their skill for many years. He added that their continued consistency will help the dressing room environment. According to him, their presence supports team stability and match confidence.
Opportunities for Young Players
- Gambhir said that resting their senior bowlers, like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, helped the team test young talent. He cited the example of Harshit Rana, an emerging all-rounder, who can bat at number eight and be effective with both ball and bat.
- He went on to explain that Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Paridhi had done well in the ODI series against South Africa despite their limited experience. He further added that Washington Sundar is also making the most of his opportunities in Tests and gets steady performances in various batting slots.
View on Batting Order Flexibility
Gambhir says that in limited-overs cricket, there is no need to have a fixed batting order apart from the openers, as a fixed batting order is important in Test cricket. His comments have come after criticism for frequently changing the ODI batting order.
Bangar on Rohit and Kohli's Role
- Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar says Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are different from other players. Bangar feels the place of Rohit and Kohli in the ODI team should not be questioned because of their long contribution to Indian cricket.
- Bangar said both the players quickly get into match rhythm and do not require too many practice sessions. Also, their drive to score runs and keep fit makes them an asset for any team. He even stated that their very presence improves the dressing-room atmosphere.
