Shubman Gill Dropped From India's T20 World Cup Squad, Srikkanth Reacts

Former Indian skipper and selector, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, has expressed his surprise over Shubman Gill not being selected for the Indian team, which is set to go for the T20 World Cup, scheduled for 2026. Shubman Gill, who was the vice-captain of the Indian T20 team until very recently, has failed to be selected for the team for the biggest tournament.

Srikkanth's Reaction to the Selection

  • Srikkanth was taken by surprise that Gill was not picked. "I was quite surprised. This is a fantastic selection. I did not think that Shubman Gill would be left out," Srikkanth was quoted as saying. Srikkanth admitted that Gill was playing well in ODIs and Test matches. Srikkanth also told that Gill performed well in England. However, Srikkanth said that the performance of Gill in T20s has not been good. His strike rate is lower than that of other players like Ishan Kishan.
  • He was also happy about the choice of Ishan Kishan, who performed well in domestic cricket, and Rinku Singh. Srikkanth termed the overall team as “fantastic” because of the fact that Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are opening the innings, and Abhishek Sharma is the world’s number one batsman.

Gill’s Current Form and Chances in ICC T20 World Cup

  • Shubman Gill has also started playing T20 cricket recently in the Asia Cup. His inclusion as the captain in the Test matches, ODIs, and vice-captain in T20 matches in the beginning of this year has resulted in his name being considered for his probable position as T20 captains in the future, although currently, he has scored only 291 runs in 15 T20 matches.
  • T20 World Cup shall commence from the 27th of February, 2026, and the event shall be jointly hosted by the countries of India and Sri Lanka.
