Former Indian cricketer, Mohammad Kaif, has expressed his take on the selection of the Indian T20 World Cup team, which has been announced for next year. They decided to retain the team captain, Suryakumar Yadav, but omitted the vice-captain, Shubman Gill. There has been mixed response on this selection.
Kaif Highlights Various Stages of Career
- Mohammad Kaif said that Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill are at different junctures of their T20 career. Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill should not be likened to one another, according to him, as Suryakumar Yadav is proven to be a match-winner in T20s, while Gill is yet to have consistency at the international stage.
- Kaif said that the selectors are still relying on Suryakumar Yadav because of his performances in the past. He said that Suryakumar Yadav has performed well in the T20 rankings by the International Cricket Council and has won matches all by himself for India.
Comparison with Virat Kohli’s Period
- Kaif drew parallels between the condition of Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli, who was struggling during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kaif explained that Virat Kohli had been struggling for a long time, yet he managed to stay in favor because of his performance over the years. Kaif thinks that Suryakumar is a case like Virat Kohli.
- He also said that he still has to prove himself in international T20 cricket. Therefore, he thinks that it is also not right to label Suryakumar and Gill the same or to leave out both of them purely on current form.
Recent T20 Performance Figures
- Suryakumar Yadav scored 218 runs in 19 innings played in T20 internationals this year. His highest score was 47 against Pakistan in Asia Cup. Also in that time, Shubman Gill scored 291 runs in 15 innings.
- Based on these performances, the selection committee decided to remove Gill from the team and make Axar Patel the vice-captain.
