Virat Kohli Returns To Vijay Hazare Trophy; Chinnaswamy Stadium To Remain Closed To Fans

Indian cricketer Virat Kohli is all set to feature in the Vijay Hazare Trophy after an interval of 15 years. His last involvement in this series had been on the 18th of February, 2010. His comeback has invoked considerable interest for cricket lovers. The starting date for the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy is the 24th of December. The inaugural match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru pits the teams of Andhra and Delhi. Kohli, the Delhi player, reached Bengaluru last night.

No Spectators Allowed

  • Fans will not be permitted to watch the match firsthand at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. It was ordered by the Karnataka state government that the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) conduct the matches without fans. The KSCA wanted to open two stands accommodating 2,000-3,000 fans, but that was rejected by the government.
  • The reasons for this decision are security-related, as there is a huge influx of people during the Christmas festivals. The government has formed a committee comprising the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) Commissioner as its chief, along with the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner and officials from the emergency and health departments. The committee will check the stadium and give a report to the government regarding allowing fans inside the ground.

Background

Since the stampede accident during the Royal Challengers Bangalore victory celebration in the IPL 2025, the Chinnaswamy Stadium has not hosted any match. There were 11 deaths and some injuries. Just recently, the government permitted the hosting of the Vijay Hazare Trophy at the stadium, but they imposed some restrictions on the audience.
