Former spinner of the England team, Monty Panesar, has shared his opinion on the current head coach of the India team, Gautam Gambhir. He is of the opinion that Gambhir can learn more about red-ball cricket by becoming the coach of a Ranji team.
Focus on Red-Ball Cricket Development
- Monty Panesar said that Gautam Gambhir has had success as a coach in white-ball cricket. He does not think, however, that Gambhir has made a mark as a coach in Test cricket. In his opinion, Gambhir needs to coach a domestic team in the Ranji Trophy, and it will become clear to him what red-ball cricket is all about.
- He also said that the current Test side looks weak for India. He added that it becomes difficult for young players when the senior players retire because it takes time for the youngsters to adapt to the circumstances.
Comments on Shubman Gill’s Captaincy
- Panesar also expressed his views on Shubman Gill."Shubman Gill is a good player, and he has to work on his selection of shots," he said.Contrary to what some people believe, he also feels that Gill has got the potential to become one like Kohli."Virat Kohli is like that only—nobody doubts his ability to score on big grounds,"
- Panesar further went on to say that he feels that Gill should not lead the team in all formats. Panesar believes that it may put too much pressure on the young batsman to handle all the responsibilities of being a leader in all the formats of the game.
