The ODI series between Team India and New Zealand got underway with a victory for India in the first match on Sunday at Vadodra. The Indians clinched the match by four wickets and went ahead in the series by 1–0. But the match could also be an indication of Washington Sundar's fitness problems.
Sundar Suffers Discomfort During the Match
- Sundar was forced to leave the field due to back pain while he was bowling. He managed to bowl just five overs and was replaced by Dhruv Jurel in the field. Though the problem was there, Sundar did bat later on in the game.
- Sundar batted for 7 runs off 7 balls and remained not out. He looked to be in great pain as he had to run between the wickets while batting. As of now, there is no word on whether he will be fit for the next match or will he sit out for the entire series.
Rahul Plays Key Role in India’s Win
KL Rahul was the major contributor to India’s successful run chase. He made an unbeaten score of 29 runs off 21 deliveries, which included two fours and one six. His composed mindset made it possible for India to achieve the target without any more setbacks.
Team Management Shares Initial Updates
- After the match, KL Rahul talked about Sundar's condition. He mentioned that he had no idea about the seriousness of the injury during the game. Rahul further said that Sundar appeared to be slightly uncomfortable but had controlled his role very well while batting since the runs required were few and there was no pressure.
- Captain Shubman Gill also added his two cents to the issue. He informed that Washington Sundar was suffering from a side strain and would have a scan after the match to find out the extent of the injury.
No Official Statement from BCCI Yet
- So far, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not released an official update on Sundar’s injury. There is also no confirmation on whether he will be ruled out of the series or if a replacement will be named.
- Washington Sundar is part of India’s T20 World Cup squad. The tournament is scheduled to take place from February 7 to March 8, which makes his fitness a matter of concern for the team management.
