All IPL Teams Led By Indian Captains For The First Time

A New Phase in the IPL

  • The Indian Premier League (IPL) has always included strong contributions from overseas players. Each team requires four international players to fill important positions including their leadership positions.
  • Since the league started in its first season foreign players have served as team leaders for their respective teams. The current league pattern has reached its first major transformation. All ten IPL teams will use Indian players to serve as their team captains for the first time in league history.
  • The IPL started in 2008 with seven teams that chose Indian players to serve as their team captains. The Rajasthan Royals won the championship match under Shane Warne's leadership. The same season saw Adam Gilchrist become the captain of the Deccan Chargers team.
  • Franchises tended to choose foreign players who had established record as certified talents. The Sunrisers Hyderabad team maintained this practice by selecting Kumar Sangakkara David Warner and Kane Williamson as their team captains. Pat Cummins served as the team's captain until he had to leave because of physical problems. Ishan Kishan will take over as interim captain because of this situation.

Ishan Kishan Takes Leadership Role

  • The selection of Ishan Kishan as interim captain surprised many observers. Earlier reports suggested Abhishek Sharma as a possible choice.
  • The management based its decision on Ishan’s recent performance. He led Jharkhand to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Through his performance as a batter he established himself as the team's captain.
  • Ishan made strong contributions to his team at the T20 World Cup. The franchise made its decision based on his current playing form and his abilities to lead others. At 27 he will coach an IPL franchise for his initial time. If Cummins remains unavailable Ishan will assume the role of team captain for the duration of the season.

Focus on Riyan Parag

  • Riyan Parag has gained attention as a new captain. He replaces Sanju Samson, who moved to Chennai Super Kings.
  • Parag already has some captaincy experience. Last season he led the team when Samson played only as an impact player due to fitness issues. The team achieved two victories during his time as head coach.
  • The franchise chose Parag as their player despite having available options such as Ravindra Jadeja and Yashasvi Jaiswal. The observers will monitor how he performs throughout this season.

Hardik Pandya and Mumbai Indians

  • Hardik Pandya led the Gujarat Titans to their first championship during the inaugural season of their franchise. The team reached the championship match which followed that season.
  • He took over the captaincy position from Rohit Sharma when he rejoined Mumbai Indians. The decision resulted in strong backlash from supporters during the 2024 season.

The period brought negative effects for the team's performance. The next season brought better results for the team which led to a decrease in criticism.

  • Hardik has completed his coaching duties for 60 matches.
  • The team achieved 35 victories while losing 25 matches.

The team needs to reach better performance levels to meet increased expectations this season.

Rajat Patidar’s Immediate Impact

Rajat Patidar achieved success with Royal Challengers Bangalore. He led the team to a title in his first season as captain.

Under his leadership:

  • The teams played 13 matches. The team won 10 matches while losing 3 matches.
  • He played as a batter while he helped the team sustain its performance during the season. The team expects him to meet high expectations throughout this season.

Ruturaj Gaikwad and Chennai Super Kings

  • Ruturaj Gaikwad has led Chennai Super Kings for the past two seasons. The team previously achieved major success under MS Dhoni.
  • Ruturaj has performed well as a batter. His results as captain have produced mixed outcomes.
  • The teams played 19 matches which resulted in 8 victories and 11 defeats.

The player needed to quit playing because of an injury that occurred during the previous season. Dhoni took over the captaincy duties again to lead his team during the rest of the match schedule. Ruturaj leads the team again this season to achieve better results for his team.

Shreyas Iyer Leadership Skills Show Consistent Performance

Shreyas Iyer has demonstrated his strong leadership abilities through his work with different teams. Delhi Capitals experienced improvement under his guidance before he led Kolkata Knight Riders to their championship victory.

In his first year as coach he guided Punjab Kings to their final appearance after they spent years in low team rankings.

His coaching record in IPL shows these results

  • The match total for 87 matches breaks down into 48 wins and 35 losses.
  • He aims to win the title with Punjab this season.

Shubman Gill’s Leadership Test

Shubman Gill leads Gujarat Titans. His leadership role in the IPL contributed to his selection as India’s national captain in Tests and ODIs.

His record as captain:

  • The team played 27 matches which resulted in 14 victory and 13 defeat.
  • The team had mixed results recently. The team did reach the playoffs in their earlier performances. Gill aims to improve both his leadership and team results.

Ajinkya Rahane and Other Captains

Ajinkya Rahane is one of the main team leaders this season. He previously led teams into battle but achieved only limited success.

His captaincy record

  • The match total for 38 matches breaks down into 14 wins and 23 losses.
