Ex-President Donald Trump of the U.S. has said that any nation that says the U.S. has high tariffs should first lower or abolish the tariffs they impose on imports from America. Trump has already threatened retaliatory tariffs against nations that impose tariffs on U.S. products. He recently reaffirmed this position in an X-Vedi post, where he justified his policy of reciprocal tariffs.
'We Are Ensuring Fair Trade'
Trump explained that the U.S. will retaliate with tariffs against any country that imposes tariffs on American products. He explained that the policy has a straightforward principle: the U.S. will retaliate with the same level of tariffs that other countries impose on its products. The U.S. will also retaliate against countries that impose VAT policies that are discriminatory towards their domestic industries. He explained that rebranding products differently or exporting them through third-party nations to evade tariffs would not be tolerated.
Apart from that, Trump promised to implement rules of non-tariff trade barriers. He requested nations to eliminate or cut tariffs on American exports before they bemoan American tariffs. He also promised to impose no tariffs on goods that are manufactured within the U.S.
'Countries Must Treat Us Fairly'
Trump criticized friends and foes equally on their trade policy, stating that America has been unfairly treated. He reminded all that America has been assisting many countries for several decades and demands fair play in return.
India Included in Reciprocal Tariff Policy
Trump explained that India will not be excluded from this policy. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has just been to the U.S. and met with Trump, and at that time this issue was being discussed.
