Supreme Court Permits 'Thug Life' Screening in Karnataka
The Supreme Court allowed the release of the movie Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan, in Karnataka. Earlier, the film faced a ban in the state after Kamal Haasan made controversial remarks about the Kannada language. In response, the film's team approached the Supreme Court for help.
Court Declares Threats Illegal
The Supreme Court confirmed that threats to prevent a film from being released are illegal. It underscored that no group is empowered to prevent a movie from being released in cinemas. If one does not like a public statement, he or she can reply with an alternative opinion, but not through threats or violence. The Court confirmed that threatening to destroy cinemas is an illegal act.
People's Rights Must Be Respected
It is the right of the people of Karnataka to disagree with Kamal Haasan, as decided by the Court. Their basic rights, including the right to view certified films, also need to be saved. Once a film has been cleared by the censor board, the public also has the right to choose whether or not to view it.
Petition Moved to Supreme Court
Supreme Court transferred the matter from Karnataka High Court. The Supreme Court also directed the state government to respond to the petition. The Supreme Court further questioned the High Court ruling asking Kamal Haasan to apologize.
