Film Release and Platform Choice
Aamir Khan is the main lead in the newly released movie Sitaare Zameen Par. The film has been well received by critics and has done good business at the box office. From August 1, the movie will go on rent on Aamir Khan's official YouTube page. The rent amount will be Rs. 100.
At a media interaction, Aamir had his take on this release strategy. He revealed that he was never comfortable with the OTT model and wanted to do something new.
Reason Behind YouTube Release
Aamir explained why he opted for YouTube over an OTT platform:
- He watched films as a kid with neighbors, and he wanted to recreate that experience again.
- He wanted people to share this movie together, just as they used to watch films together in his childhood.
- As per him, if 100 individuals watch it collectively, every one of them pays less than Rs. 1.
- He hopes that the message of the film reaches every part of India.
He further added that the Rs. 100 earned by the audience is worth more to him than the Rs. 125 crore that OTT players pay. Audience love and respect mean more, he added. Aamir also added that if audiences like the movie, they will ensure support to it.
His Opinion on OTT Platforms
Aamir spoke about not availing OTT platforms. He had said he couldn't reply to the questions then but never feels comfortable with the OTT system. He pointed out:
- He still does not get OTT.
- He thinks films should be made available at a cheaper rate.
- YouTube, he feels, is a better platform to reach more people.
He also declared that his older movies will be placed on YouTube after this release.
Comment on the Film ‘Saiyaara’
Aamir commented on Saiyaara, a recently released film that is doing well at the box office. He said its success did not surprise him. The story, he noted, connects well with today’s generation. However, Aamir added that he aims to create stories that appeal to all age groups, not just one.
