Nagarjuna Speaks About 'Coolie', His Character Simon, And Viral Shooting Video

'Coolie' Cast and Pre-Release Event

Actor Nagarjuna delivered the speech at the pre-release function of Coolie, which was organized in Hyderabad. He was accompanied by director Lokesh Kanagaraj, actor Sathyaraj, and Shruti Haasan, among others. The film, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and supported by Sun Pictures, will release on August 14.

Trying Out New Roles

Nagarjuna revealed that he likes to experiment with new characters in order to keep himself interested during the shoot. He recollected that after playing Ninnepelladatha, he did Annamayya, a sudden change then. He underscored the importance of experimentation in his career, considering failures and successes equally.

Securing the Role in 'Coolie'

He told us how Lokesh Kanagaraj approached him. Lokesh said, "If you want to be a villain, I'll tell you a story. If not, I'll have tea and leave." Nagarjuna, having liked Lokesh's performance in Khaidi, was keen to work with him. Nagarjuna, after listening to the script, inquired if Rajinikanth had already given his nod, as the role 'Simon' seemed like a lead role.

Recording the Narration and Giving Feedback

For the first time, Nagarjuna made Lokesh's narration audio-recorded. He listened to it a few times at home and then provided feedback. Instead of rejecting them, Lokesh made those suggestions a part of shaping Simon's character. Nagarjuna liked this working together.

Viral Video Leak and Reaction

Nagarjuna had raised concerns regarding a video clip of the second day of shoot that leaked online. "I was curious to know how people could be so insensitive," he remarked. The scene was filmed in Vizag.

On-Set Environment and Lokesh's Directing Style

He termed Lokesh as being a patient and respectful director who works with six cameras and tends to finish scenes in a single shot. Lokesh finished the film within budget, leaving ₹5 crore of money. Seeing the cut work, Nagarjuna was amazed at how well the scenes worked out, even in a negative role.

Co-acting and Rajinikanth's Support

He appreciated the work of Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Soubin, and Upendra. He also recounted an incident when Rajinikanth with a smile said, "If I had known you looked this fit, I would have told Lokesh not to cast you." Nagarjuna was impressed by Rajinikanth's consistent commitment, recalling how he still memorizes lines on the location.

Thailand Action Sequence and Team Spirit

An action sequence was filmed in Thailand in 17 nights with over 350 crew personnel. On the last day, Rajinikanth distributed each member of the crew a gift and asked them to keep something for their children. Nagarjuna found it wonderful.

Comments on Music and Final Thoughts

He complimented Anirudh's music as consistent hits his recent releases have been. He responded in a funny tone when asked if he enjoyed playing the role of a villain, saying that it was easy because villains enjoy greater freedom. Drawing comparisons from Coolie, he stated:

  • Simon (himself) – Killer
  • Lokesh Kanagaraj – Super
  • Rajinikanth – Don
  • Sathyaraj – Criminal (good guy one)
  • Shruti Haasan – Geethanjali
