The question of working hours in India has been contentious for some time. Towards that end, Capgemini India CEO Ashwin Yardi has spoken, adding that working for 9.5 hours a day, five days a week, suffices.
Ashwin Yardi's View on Work-Life Balance
Addressing the NASSCOM Technology and Leadership Forum, Yardi was questioned regarding how many working hours a week would be ideal. His reply was that "working 9.5 hours a day, five days a week, is sufficient. Don't email on weekends." He also mentioned that he had been following the same for the last four years.
Although he agreed that he too toils over weekends, he explained that he does not send emails to staff members over weekends. NASSCOM Chairperson Sindhu Gangadharan, who was also present at the event, seconded Yardi's view, reiterating once more that productivity is higher than working long hours.
Discussion on Long Working Hours in India
Earlier this year, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy's assertion that Indian youth would have to work 70 hours a week to remain competitive was the subject of widespread controversy. Some agreed with him, but others did not. Likewise, L&T Chairman S.N. Subrahmanyan's advice that employees put in 90 hours a week again raised questions about work-life balance and productivity.
The differing views reflect the ongoing controversy regarding the best working hours, employee well-being, and productivity in Indian enterprises.
