After days of talks inside the Congress party, V.D. Satheesan has somehow been picked as Kerala’s new Chief Minister. The call arrived ten days after the state assembly election results were declared. Senior Congress figures kept having a few rounds of consultations , before the party leadership put Satheesan’s name in place.
The announcement happened in Delhi by Deepa Dasmunshi, the AICC in-charge for Kerala. She said, pretty clearly that Satheesan will function as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the Kerala Assembly.
Not long after the announcement, Congress MLAs met in Thiruvananthapuram and voted unanimously, in favor of Satheesan’s leadership. Later he went to meet Governor Rajendra Arlekar with senior party leaders and submitted the list of MLAs who would back him. The new Kerala government is expected to take office on the 18th of this month, as per schedule.
How Satheesan Reached the Top Position
The selection of Kerala’s new CM came after quite a bit of internal rivalry within Congress. Senior leaders K.C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala were also in the running, though the final decision went Satheesan way. Party leadership looked at political backing within the party and the alliance, and then made the choice.
Several things played in his favor. Congress leaders credited him with guiding the party back to power after ten years in the role of opposition. During the election campaign, he also managed to gather backing from party volunteers and from alliance partners across the state.
Political Journey of V.D. Satheesan
V.D. Satheesan was born in 1964 in Nettur near Kochi. He studied law, and later got involved in public life. His political journey started through the Kerala Students Union (KSU) which is basically the student arm of the Congress party.
Satheesan entered electoral politics pretty young , and well, since 2001 he has represented the Paravur Assembly constituency in Kerala. Somewhere along the way he built a sort of reputation as an active law maker and a frequent public speaker, also known for pushing hard in debates.
For the last five years, he served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. In that position he was regularly challenging the policies of the ruling Left government, and he became, like , one of the main faces of the Congress party in the state.
Support From Alliance Partners
Support from alliance partners mattered a lot too, in the end, in Satheesan’s being chosen as the new CM of Kerala. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), which currently holds 22 seats in the assembly, backed him openly for the chief minister’s role.
Other partners across the United Democratic Front (UDF), including the Kerala Congress and the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), supported his leadership as well. That extra backing helped solidify his standing during internal rounds of discussions inside Congress.
Why Congress Selected Satheesan
Congress leadership basically saw Satheesan as someone with strong organizational grip , and also good communication with party workers. Many people inside the party thought he could reinforce the Congress in Kerala and keep the alliance together, at least in practice.
His work as Opposition Leader also lifted his profile. Party leaders felt he was quite effective at raising public concerns, and pushing back against the Left Democratic Front government both inside , and even beyond the assembly.
At the same time, the top leadership considered his public image , and the way he could connect with different sections of voters across Kerala.
What Comes Next for Kerala
With the leadership issue resolved, attention now shifts to the formation of the new government. Satheesan is expected to announce his cabinet after consultations with alliance partners and senior Congress leaders.
As Kerala’s new CM, he will face key responsibilities, including governance, economic development, welfare programs, and coordination within the ruling coalition.
The coming weeks will show how the new administration plans to address public expectations after the election victory.
