Deleted Instagram Post of Ex-FBI Director Under Investigation
Ex-FBI Director James Comey is under investigation after a social media post that drew concerns from the public. He posted "86 47" on Instagram and deleted it immediately. Some officials believe the numbers point to an attack against the 47th President of the United States.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that the U.S. Secret Service has the issue under review. The agency is also determining the intent and context of the post.
Comey Responds to Allegations
James Comey replied that the numbers were indicating shells he was stepping on on the beach. He explained the post was no threat. It was not meant, as far as he is concerned, with any political or violent messages in the numbers.
He also explained that he took down the picture to avoid misunderstandings. Comey added that he condemns violence and had not expected his posting to be interpreted as a call to action.
Earlier Threats and Incidents Involving Donald Trump
Former President Donald Trump was injured in an assassination attempt last year at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A shooter fired toward a building while Trump was speaking. Secret Service agents took swift action and protected him.
Another such incident had occurred in West Palm Beach, Florida, where a man bearing a gun went to the golf course fence where Trump was engaged in golf play. Authorities apprehended the suspect after shooting him.
Days later, police officers arrested a masked man near the National Convention. The man was reported to have an AK-47 rifle hidden in a bag. A loaded clip had also been found.
Improved Security Measures for Ex-President Trump
Following these incidents, authorities confirm that security has improved substantially for Trump. Various Secret Service units now closely monitor him to make sure there are no probable threats.
