Indian Students Get Fewer Study Permits in 2025
Indian students are currently finding it more difficult to apply for a chance to study in Canada. As per Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the nation cut back on the number of study permits that it gave to Indian nationals by approximately 31% during the first quarter of 2025. A total of only 30,640 permits were issued. Compared to the same quarter in 2024, as many as 44,295 permits were approved.
Canada's Larger Strategy to Restrict Foreign Students
This decline forms a part of Canada's policy to restrict the overall quantity of foreign students. In 2023, Canada granted a total of 681,155 study permits, out of which 278,045 were issued to Indians. In 2024, the number fell to 516,275, and Indian students received 188,465 permits.
Reasons Behind the Permit Cut
Canada is limiting student permits mainly due to housing shortages. The government has also pointed out that increased immigration is putting pressure on public infrastructure, such as transportation and healthcare systems.
New Immigration Target Set for 2028
Prime Minister Mark Carney declared that by the year 2028, foreign workers and international students will not exceed 5% of the population. To aid this proposal, IRCC set the limit of student permits at 437,000 for 2025. The initial projection was 485,000. The amount will remain constant beginning in 2026.
New Updated Financial Requirements for Study Permits
New regulations for study permits also came into force on January 1, 2024. Candidates are now required to provide evidence of having at least 20,635 Canadian dollars (around ₹12.7 lakh). Earlier, the requirement was 10,000 Canadian dollars (around ₹6.14 lakh). Designated learning institutions are also required to obtain a permission letter from IRCC for every student.
