Diabetes Test Simplified: New Breath Device Detects Sugar Level

New machine takes the test without drawing blood

The new machine is able to test sugar levels without drawing blood. This device, which has been invented by faculty members and students of Jatashankar Trivedi Government College in Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, determines the sugar level through breathing. Users just blow into the machine. It then tests the breath and displays the results in seconds.

Device provides rapid and easy sugar level readings

The device does not report an actual count of sugars. Rather, it provides an easy reading:

  • Low: Shows low sugar levels
  • Moderate: Shows normal sugar levels
  • High: Shows high sugar levels

This renders the process faster and less painful than in the past when glucometers and blood samples were used.

Project initiated in 2017 and patented in 2023

This device was started in 2017. Diabetic patients have ketone production because of ketogenic metabolism, according to Professor Durgesh Agase. One of the components of these ketones is acetone, which is expelled out through their breath. The researchers compared how breath acetone concentrations correlate with body glucose levels.

How the device works

Scientists developed a system to measure breath acetone and correlate it with blood glucose. They programmed this correlation into software and constructed the device with the assistance of engineers. The device employs this input data to indicate the sugar level of a user based on the breath sample.
