Former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s Whereabouts Raise Questions

Resignation Triggers Political Controversy

Jagdeep Dhankhar's unexpected resignation as Vice President has been in the limelight. He had claimed health reasons for doing so. Opposition parties have, however, questioned this reason.

Sanjay Raut's Letter to Home Minister

Top Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently. According to him, nobody has been able to reach Dhankhar. Raut asked for information regarding Dhankhar's whereabouts and health.

In his letter, Raut stated that:

  • Rajya Sabha members attempted to talk to Dhankhar but could not.
  • Attempts to connect with his staff also yielded no response.
  • The unavailability of information is prompting concern for his health and safety.

Raut shared the letter on his X account a day after he sent it.

Potential Legal Action

Raut indicated that he may file a habeas corpus petition before the Supreme Court to know Dhankhar's location. He clarified that he first approached the Home Minister to seek the information before pursuing legal action. He hoped that Dhankhar would respond to these issues himself.

Opposition Leaders Seek Clarity

Last week, some of the leaders of the opposition requested the central government to give reports about Dhankhar's status.

Details of the Resignation

Dhankhar stepped down on July 21, the opening day of Parliament's monsoon session. That morning, he chairpersoned Rajya Sabha business without indications of an imminent decision. At night, he resigned from his position on grounds of his health. Opposition members suspect that discord with the central government regarding the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Verma in the case of tainted note bundles could have had something to do with it.
