Increasing Worries about Gang Crime in Canada
Local authorities are alarmed at the increasing activities of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang in Canada. Two shootouts at Kapil Sharma's cafe in recent times have drawn public focus on the issue. The Conservative Party responded by writing to the Mark Carney government, calling for the gang to be officially recognized as a terrorist group. The party argues that the gang is terrorizing citizens and immediate action is needed.
Accusations by Canadian MP Frank Caputo
Canadian MP Frank Caputo had written that the Bishnoi gang is increasing its criminal activities in Canada. He accused the gang of robbery and murder against Canadian nationals. Caputo pointed out that the gang has taken responsibility for various violent crimes committed both in Canada and internationally. He further mentioned that their activities are politically, religiously, and ideologically driven. This, he says, would add the gang to the terrorist list, thus providing law enforcement with more authority to break up their network.
Political Support for Action
Caputo pointed out that a number of Canadian political leaders have also raised such concerns before. He stated that Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown was among four leaders who called for action previously. He also cited British Columbia Premier David Eby, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, and Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke as being in favour of the action. He stated there is wide political consensus that the operations of the Bishnoi gang need to be brought to an end.
