Zelensky: Putin Trying To Mislead Trump On Sanctions

Zelensky's Statement on Putin and Trump

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that Russian President Vladimir Putin is trying to mislead former US President Donald Trump. He further mentioned that Putin is keen to delay the imposition of new US sanctions. Zelensky issued these remarks in an interview done in Kyiv.

Putin, as per Zelensky, gained through his recent meeting with Trump in Alaska. He claimed that instead of suffering setbacks in the war, Putin gained publicity by negotiating and taking selfies with Trump. Zelensky stressed that Putin is grabbing every opportunity to dodge sanctions. He also pointed out that procrastination in sanctioning will provide time to Russia for preparing the next move. He emphasized that Putin only reacts to strong pressure, and therefore strong measures are needed in order to usher in a cessation of the war.

Reaction to Trump's Remarks

The US recently imposed high tariffs on Indian goods because India purchased oil from Russia. Trump also indicated that the war in Ukraine will end only when NATO countries stop buying Russian oil and when China is tariffsied. Zelensky replied that such measures are understandable. However, he reiterated that Trump does not have to wait for European countries or other allies. Zelensky called for the United States, which has the capability to act unilaterally, to impose sanctions as soon as possible.

NATO and Russian Drone Incident

Russian drones entered Polish airspace, a NATO member state, last week. Poland stated that they were destroyed with the assistance of NATO. Russia later clarified that it did not intend to strike Poland. Russia's ally Belarus clarified that the drones got jammed and went astray into Poland by mistake. Zelensky responded in disbelief that Western countries did not issue the announcement of sanctions, even after this incident.

Sanctions on Oil Imports

Zelensky has always been one to utter sanctions against countries who are buying Russian oil as the right thing to do. He was among the supporters of the latest tariff placement on Indian imports because of this very reason. Earlier, at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit held at Tianjin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present on the podium with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Putin. Zelensky referred to this as one of the challenges for Ukraine to get improved action taken against Russia.
