Zelenskyy's Speech at the UN
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has added that weapons are deciding who lives or dies in the modern world. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, he has referred to the current situation as the most dangerous arms race in human history. He appealed to the world community to take stronger actions against Russia.
Criticism of Global Institutions
Zelenskyy reported that the UN and other global organizations have failed to halt wars. He pointed out the Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan wars as examples of their failure. In his view, if countries do not take action, weapons alone will decide security and survival. He cautioned that Russia still procrastinates its war with Ukraine and that the fighting can escalate further.
Warning About Russia
He said Russian drones are already flying over Europe. Zelenskyy made it clear that unless President Vladimir Putin is stopped at this moment, the war will spread beyond Ukraine. The war between Russia and Ukraine began in February 2022, and now it has been more than three years. International efforts to put an end to the conflict involving the United States have been unsuccessful.
India's Position at the UN
India's Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar also spoke at the UN General Assembly. He stressed common challenges to most nations, especially those from the Global South. He further stated that before they even got back fully from the COVID-19 pandemic, these nations already have a lot of problems to address. These include the war in Ukraine and Gaza, climate catastrophes, unstable trade and investment patterns, unstable interest rates, and setbacks in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
