India Recognized As A Major Power In Asian Power Index 2025

India was classified as a "major power" in the Asian Power Index 2025, according to an announcement by the Australian think tank Lowy Institute on Friday. The new status marks recognition for India's economic growth and military prowess, partly reflected in the country's performance in Operation Sindoor.

The Institute further noted that differences still exist between India's aspirations and its present reality. These wide gaps make India limited, particularly if compared to China. The Asian Power Index is released annually and ranks countries by their power capabilities and influence in Asia.

India had secured 40 points in the 2025 index against 38.1 points in 2024 and attained major power status. The ranking now places India at the third position after the United States, with 80.5 points, and China with 73.7 points. Japan ranks fourth with 38.8 points.

India ranked third primarily based on its economic capabilities and future resources. Its economic power rank improved by one place as it overtook Japan. India reached the ninth position in economic relations while moving upwards, mainly influenced by higher inward investment.

According to the Lowy Institute, the Indian economy and military capability have grown in the 2025 index. In defense systems, however, India is at an 11th position. The ranking has slipped two positions as compared to last year, below the Philippines and Thailand.

The Index shows India as second only to the US for attracting investments, with the country surpassing China.
